Petra, Part Two - The Treasury

After about a half hour hike, the narrow canyon of the Siq opens up and you get your first view of the impressive Treasury.

Once arriving at the Treasury, one is very much transported to another time and place. Perhaps, the high canyon walls also serve to isolate the place and take it outside of time, but the rattle of the horse-drawn carriages and the guttural moan and snort of the passing camel caravans makes one feel as though they have been transported back to the Nabatean era, something out of a movie. The hawkers are distinctive, dark-skinned and laser-eyed, perhaps bedouin in origin, because they are unlike any other Jordanians I have seen. Several of them have long, dark curly locks beneath their head scarves and sharp, dagger-like goatees; they look like Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. They advertise their camels and donkeys as having air conditioning and Wifi; they definitely have a sense of humor.

As featured in the movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark", Elise was accused of intentionally dressing the part of Indiana Jones.
