Petra, Part One - The Siq

On Friday, we rode down to Petra by bus with a group of people from work. The bus ride was three hours, but went by fairly quickly as we wound our way through the desert south to Petra. After stopping to check in at the hotel, we headed straight for the park, arriving around noon. Fortunately, the first part of the hike winds through the narrow canyon entrance to the park, also called the Siq, and once we got to the canyon, much of the path was in the shade.

Before arriving at the Siq, one must take a short hike from the visitor center. Horses, as well as horse-drawn buggies are available to take folks from the visitor center to the Treasury, but we decided to hike in by foot.

One of the horse-drawn buggies. We had plans to take one back from the Treasury, but Sam was a little freaked out by how the buggy bounced over the cobblestones.

A place to tie up your horse, right before the entrance to the Siq.

One of the buggies coming through the entrance to the Siq. As you walk through the narrow canyon of the Siq, you can hear approaching buggies by the clip-clop of the horses hooves against the cobblestones echoing through the passage. It can be very quiet, until you hear the clopping coming through the canyon, whereupon you must quickly press against the canyon wall, lest you are flattened and run over by one of the buggies.

A peek at our destination, the Treasury through the end of the Siq.
