Sam's First Tennis Tournament

Though he had a fever the night before and a sore throat the morning of, Sam still played in his first official tennis tournament over the weekend on Friday.

Sam would play one match to 10 against each player in his bracket. The top four would go on to play in the finals that afternoon.

Sam played really well and finished the morning with a 3-4 record. He lost two of his games by one point! 9 to 10. So he came very close to making it to the finals. If he had won one more game (even one more point!) he would've made it. Unfortunately, he may have been the victim of a bad call (scoring and judging were done by the "older" kids in the camp and a teenage girl scoring one of his matches may have been more concerned about missing a text than making a correct call, but I'll just leave it at that...)

At any rate, we are still very proud of him. Up to this point, Sam had only played team sports, and I think it takes a lot of character to put himself out there and take on an individual sport. I told him I was very proud of him, because in individual sports, if you don't do well, you don't have anyone to blame, but yourself. But as long as you try your best, you are still a winner.

Sam smiled throughout the entire morning, even when he didn't when. I think this -- more so than anything else -- is something to be really proud of, that he went out there and truly had fun and tried his best. He was competitive and disappointed in himself when we got home for not making it to the final round, but he never showed it on the court.

Clementine thought so, too....

...I think.
